Osteopathic Doctors DO?
Do they see everything from diabetes checks, sport physicals, removal of skin lesions, yearly reproductive exams (pap smears, hernia checks), hemorrhoids or constipation issues, allergies and PRESCRIBE medication like MDs?
can they work in hospitals, clinics and teach?
in America DOs are MD equals and most of Canada (although they must put MD on their business cards in Canada). Working in hospitals is a different story.
There are DO hospitals with a few MDs in them. But there are also Mostly MD hospitals with DOs in them.
It matters on what residency you do ie) the MD residency or the DO residency. If you do a MD residency you can work in either hospital. If you do a DO residency you are stuck in the DO hospitals only.
But, it seems you are just wanting to be a DO just to be an MD equal. Honestly this be weeded out of you within your interview with any DO professor. Whether it be single, group interview or a board interview they all we know right away. Since its about OMT/OMM FIRST and this will be known right away. I suggest reconsidering, because some of these interview profs will get your barred from any MD interview you may have after them (they can pull up your MD application if you file one, which many applicants to not realize).
FYI: teaching doesn’t come easily
1. DO degree only = clinician (and that is if you have connections)
2. To be guaranteed a clinician or professorship position you need to apply to the DO/PhD or DO/MSc programs and that is all done by board interviews.
