Why don’t people get blood poisoning from hemorrhoids?
It may seem like a strange question but when you have bleeding hemorrhoids why don’t you get blood poisoning? You would think that fecies would infect a wound.
The standard medical view of infection, is that it is happening all the time, but we don’t notice if the infection is fought off quickly and efficiently.
The infections we can fight off most effectively are those that our system meets most frequently. The bugs in faeces are symbiotic organisms that help with digestion (no, not the ones in the yoghurt!). Your immune system is dealing with these all the time, and finding fragments of damaged ones lying about, so they are easily identified and controlled.
However, some of the discomfort piles cause is actually the kind of infection you are thinking of. A lot of symptoms that doctors describe as ‘inflammation’ are an infection by some otherwise harmless bug that lives in or on the human body. (I don’t mean the doctors are wrong – the definition of ‘inflammation’ includes this cause of swelling, redness and etc, as well as some others.)
If you’re worried, good hygiene CAN help prevent piles, or at least reduce the frequency & severity of the symptoms. BUT if you’re TOO thorough about cleansing, you can cause ‘micro-fissures’, which can then get infected…
